I spent 15 summers at sleep away camp, It was the same camp my mother went to and it is the same camp I sent my daughter too. I always knew I wanted to write a musical about camp, but I wanted it to be real and I wanted it to be funny. I had seen other stories and movies about sleep away camp but none that truly depicted the experience of attending and/or sending your child to a Jewish camp in the Tri State and surrounding areas. That’s a world unto it’s own, and it’s a world I really wanted to capture.
Cool at Camp is part musical and part shtick with alot of emotions and nostalgia thrown in. There are characters you really grow to care about and a theme that rings true. Being “cool at camp” really means being comfortable and confident in being who you truly are. Camp is the one place that everyone and anyone can be cool.
